KINGMAN - Mohave County supervisors elected Dist. 1 Sup. Pete Byers of Kingman as the new chairman of the Board Monday.
Former chair Dist. 2 Supervisor Tom Sockwell of Bullhead City was also appointed vice-chair for 2006. Byers served as the chair of the Board last year. Unlike previous years, Dist. 3 Sup. Buster Johnson of Lake Havasu City did not object. In other action, the Board appointed Larry Sinagoga to replace Noel Labonte on the planning and zoning commission for District 2, which includes Bullhead City, Mohave Valley and Golden Valley. Sinagoga will fill Labonte's unexpired term on the commission until July 6, 2009. Alex Cariaga of Fort Mojave, who ran against Sockwell in the last election, asked the Board where Sinagoga stood on applying impact fees on developers for new subdivisions. Byers had to tell Cariaga several times to lower his voice or he would be removed from the meeting. The Board also approved an agreement between the county and Bullhead City for $768,417 in flood control improvements. The projects would include design and construction of channel improvement in the Havasupai Wash, Chaparral Wash and miscellaneous flood control projects throughout Bullhead City. The Board also approved a lease agreement between the Mohave County Airport Authority and Panda Express and Taco Bell at the Laughlin/Bullhead City airport. The supervisors also authorized the Mohave County Fair Association to conduct horse racing at the county fairgrounds in Kingman May 12, 13, 19 and 20, 2007. The Board also approved a preliminary plan for a new subdivision called Stetson Ranch with 57 residential lots on more than 14.4 acres located south of El Rodeo Road between Mountain View Road and Emerald River Drive. The Supervisors approved rezoning the Stetson Ranch property from agricultural residential one-acre minimum lot size to single-family residential. Manufactured homes would be prohibited. The Board also approved a use permit for a dog kennel on five-acre property on La Riqueza Road between Calle Del Media and Mountain View Road. The Board extended a contract with Baron Pest Control of Bullhead City through to June 30, 2007 for spraying of mosquitoes especially against West Nile Virus. The Board also approved a $41,692 contract with the Governor's Office of Highway Safety for overtime for traffic enforcement programs for the sheriff's office. The Board also extended Gary Engels' contract as special investigator in Colorado City until Oct. 18. Engels has investigated underage marriages in the polygamist town on the Utah border. Nine men including church leader Warren Jeffs are currently charged with felonies including marrying under-age girls. |
