A second compound associated with he Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) has been uncovered in southwest Colorado, near the town of Mancos. The compound is located at 15252 CR 39 in remote Montezuma County. According to officials with the Montezuma County Sheriff's Department, David Allred of Washington County, Utah, purchased a parcel of property near the town of Mancos, in November, 2003, very close to the time when he bought 1,691 acres near Eldorado, Texas.

Allred, using the same tactics he implemented here in Texas, told locals in Colorado that he was buying the property for use as a hunting retreat. Then, a major construction project began.

Word of the compound's existence first developed here in Eldorado. Sheriff David Doran forwarded that information to Montezuma County, Colorado law enforcement officials. Doran also provided them with other background details he has compiled on the FLDS since the religious sect and its reclusive prophet, Warren Jeffs, began relocating hundreds of church members to Schleicher County.

Lawmen from the two jurisdictions originally intended to withhold public disclosure of the new compound so that Colorado officials might have the opportunity for covert surveillance. Also, it was hoped that private investigator Sam Brower of Cedar City, Utah, would be able to successfully serve Warren Jeffs and/or some of his associates with a summons to appear before a Utah judge.

The Success has been following details of this story closely and was prepared to withhold the story from publication until such time as the lawmen could gather more information about the compound. However, on Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, as it became apparent that the story would not hold until the next print edition of The Success, the decision was made to break the story and publish it on the Success website along with exclusive photos from the scene.

More information will be published on this website as it becomes available and a more complete and in depth story will appear in the Oct. 28, 2004 edition of The Success.
