No plea deal for husband involved in Warren Jeffs conviction

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A defense attorney says he'll ask a judge to dismiss rape charges filed against a man whose 2001 spiritual marriage led to the criminal conviction of Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints leader Warren Jeffs.

Washington County prosecutors charged FLDS follower Allen Steed with rape in September 2007 - one day after a jury convicted Jeffs on two counts of rape as an accomplice for his role in Steed's marriage to Elissa Wall.

Steed was 19 and Wall was 14 when they married. At Jeffs' trial, Wall said she objected to the marriage and was forced into sex. Steed said he believed the sexual relationship initiated by Wall was consensual.

In 5th District Court Tuesday, attorney Jim Bradshaw and prosecutors said plea agreement negotiations had failed.
