ST. GEORGE - Wayland Wyler, 40, was arrested at 1:53 p.m. Wednesday at Dixie Regional Medical Center on charges of multiple warrants, according to the St. George Police Department.

Chief Deputy Rob Tersigni, with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, said deputies received an anonymous tip early Wednesday morning informing them Wyler was checked into the hospital.

"We received information he was in the hospital and we didn't do anything but pass along the information to St. George Police Department," Tersigni said.

The Washington City Police Department first came into contact with Wyler at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday when they responded to a carbon monoxide poisoning call.

Sgt. Chris Ray, with the Washington City Police Department, said the officer's report indicated the officers on scene were not aware Wyler had warrants out for his arrest.

Ray said there were indications Wyler was in the garage working on his vehicle.

"We're suspecting that he (Wyler) was suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning," he said.

Mike Crouch, with the Iron/Garfield Counties Narcotics Task Force, arrested Wyler in Spring 2006 on charges of first-degree sodomy on a child and first-degree aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

"Wyler failed to appear three times at a status conference at the 5th District Court in Cedar City," Crouch said.

Crouch defined a status conference as a meeting with the judge to determine whether the case is ready to proceed with trial, a plea bargain has been reached or the case is not ready to go forward.

After Wyler didn't appear the third time, the judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

Crouch said it doesn't matter who, what, when or why, just as long as the person police are looking for is arrested.

He added it boiled down to public support in catching Wyler.

"I would like to know who that individual (the anonymous tip) is and thank them personally, but I can do it this way too," Crouch said.

Wyler was booked into Purgatory Correctional Facility on three outstanding warrants and $160,000 bail.
